The Mclane edger came shortly after I ordered it and it did not take long to put it together. It is a great edger for the sidewalk and makes the lawn look professional. My wife was disappointed in the trenching part for the garden beds. She wanted a wider trench and with the narrow blade it is hard to get this done. It can bog down in clay and stall. Other than that it runs great!

    Starts up promptly!

This is the finest edger I have ever owned, right out of the box it started on the first pull. Easy to use even propells itself..!

Easy to assemble and even easier to operate.

Does a good job but cable broke on the first use and can’t find anyone in area to do warranty work. Using a string to hold throttle open. I read other reviews about the same problems so I thought that McLane’s would have solved this issue by now but I guess not.

The comments made about the plastic throttle control are correct. It does not want to stay in place. However, everything else about this edger is wonderful. It used to take an hour to do my edging with the stick models that swap heads between string trimmers and edgers. I did the job in 10 minutes with the McLane. If I had known how easy this one is, I would have purchased it long ago.

I use it for the curb as well. It is not as easy there, since only 2 of the 4 wheels make contact there, but it is still better than previous types I have used.

Throttle assembly is piece of junk
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Overall the edger works good, but it’s infuriating to pay over $300 for a piece of equipment that cannot work right out of the box. Like everyone else who has complained before, McLane needs to do something about the throttle cable assembly. Mine was broke even before it left the factory, worst thing is, you’d think with all the complaints they would make some decent attempt to fix it. Made in China doesn’t seem so bad after all.

The edger failed on first start which was disappointing. I had difficulty with the first “authorized dealer” who said that he would do warranty work – I took the edger to the shop and then they said that they would only do warranty work if the edger was purchased locally. I am yet to report the shop to Briggs & Stratton, but plan to. I will update my review when the warranty work is completed and can properly assess the edger.

This edger is easy to start and easy to handle. I have a very long driveway which curves and the Craftsman edgers I have used always were difficult to keep from hitting the concrete. Typical poor quality from China. This edger is a quality product made in the USA and can be controlled to avoid the concrete. I am glad to help, even though in a very small way, provide employment by buying USA whenever possible.

    1 minor fix from A 5 STAR
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this product after reading the other reviews. I have long been searching for something like this as I am tired of using my weed-wacker to trim my sidewalk edging.

Quality seems good, easy to assemble and use. Puts a nice finishing touch on my yard. However, as other reviews indicated, the throttle assembly is cheaply made of plastic and sticks. I took the suggestion to grease-up and silicone spray the entire throttle assembly before the first use and it was still tough to work properly. Of course the fact that it arrived broken did not help. The mounting assembly was cracked right where it fits into the brace. Other than this seemingly silly over-sight the manufacturer has built a pretty good machine. Time will be a better tell but, I am pleased as it stands after two uses.

    Good edger, but heavy
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a very well built edger, but it is a little cumbersome for my application. I have about an acre of lawn with interspersed flower beds. Think of it like a golf course with the flower beds being sand traps. I only have a very short spot where the lawn abuts a concrete deck.

Before using the edger, we first established edges using a half-moon edger and a spade. The goal was to get at least a two inch difference in height between the lawn and the flower beds. Once the edges were established, I use the Mclane edger to maintain them.

It does a beautiful job, but is a little difficult to push. Our lot is sloping and the lawn isn’t very smooth. This causes the edger to bottom out in spots. I also find it a little difficult to aim. This causes me to create new edges in the spots where I get too close to the existing edge. This problem may go away as I get more experience.

A nice feature is the ability to place the blade in a horizontal position and use it as a tiny lawn mower. Because of the curves around the flower beds, I sometimes can’t mow to the edge of the lawn with the riding mower. In these spots I can use the edger to complete the mowing job.

Before making my purchase, I called the Mclane company to get some help in choosing the correct model for my application. This was a very interesting experience. The phone was answerd by a REAL PERSON. I almost didn’t know what to say, not being presented with a numbered list of options. I eventually talked to a 30 year employee who recommended the 101 model instead of the 801 model I was considering. He said that the 101 had less of a dropped belly and would be less likely to bottom out than the 801. He also said it was less expensive. He also highly recommended the Honda engine over the Briggs and Stratton, but these are almost impossible to find on the market and cost several hundred dollars more.

In the short area where I can run the edger on the concrete deck, it is a dream to use and very easy to push. If your application is edging around sidewalks and driveways, I highly recommend this product.

    Amazon customer service disappointing

Edger arrived and recoil start would not pull out at all and appeared jammed on something. Did not want to risk voiding warranty so I immediatley called amazon CS. I was told I could not return edger because of haz material but if I took it to repair shop or could fix it myself I would be compensated for my time etc… Also if edger could not be fixed they would send me a new one and I would just trash the bad one. The honest man I am I repaired edger by hammering out the bends in the recoil start housing which was bent and also the coupler which attaches to the flywheel and had to replace one rivet. I called amazon CS and told them the time I had into fixing the edger plus the fact it was hardly new now that I had to take a hammer to straighten out what was bent leaving marks and the fact the warranty was possibly voided now. They gave me $100 refund and $20 dollar gift card. I told them I had that much time alone in fixing it. The first CS rep told me to fix it myself if I could and of course this was not in his notes so the second rep told me I voided the warranty and should not have done that. What the heck! I asked to be compensated for the fact the machine now has no warranty and is not new by any means and I have not had chance to use it so I do not know if it actually works other than starting it. I told them to make things right I need a total of $250 and I was told $100 was all they could do and there was no other recourse. Thats what I get for taking the high road and I wanted to make sure I communicated to all amazoners that they were taking the low road. BUYER BEWARE AMAZON CS STINKS!!! DO NOT BUY ANY COMBUSTIBLE FUEL DRIVEN ITEMS FROM THEM AS YOU CANNOT RETURN THEM!!!

After receiving my edger and putting it together, the engine would not turn over. The botton of the recoil starter housing was dented in shipping. After reading reviews on this machine, it seems that this could be avoided if it was packaged better. I removed the housing and pounded out the dent and the engine started right away. To avoid throttle problems, I sprayed the cable with a silicone spray and this worked great.

    Best Grass Edger
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This edger for $299.99 including shipping is the best that I could find for the money. It was very easy to assemble and started on the second pull. It is very easy to use. I have a bad back and the walk behind type of edger is about all that I can use on our 400 foot drive. The engineering on the Mclane 101 edger is vastly superior to the similar looking Sears model that I just got rid of. The lower mounting position of the motor and the quality of construction have a lot of influence on the balance and ease of handling. The plastic wheels must have a better quality of ball bearings because you can roll this edger on the concrete drive with 2 fingers rather than the 2 hands and considerable effort that are required to keep the Sears edger moving in the correct direction. I have only 2 suggestions for the manufacturer. Place a small amount of grease on the throttle assembly at the carburetor to eliminate jamming of the throttle control and do not ship via Fed-X to reduce damage.

This machine simplified our work tremendously. We needed to cut down some brush and tall grass. This edger worked great, we turned the blade sideways and it cut the tall grass down with very little effort. It cuts into the ground effortlessly when we edge.

Received McLane edger today — very fast shipping. Edger does a good job bur the throtle cable assembly and the recoil starter cover are a little “cheesey”. Throtle cable broke the first tiem I tried to use it and I had to remove the cover for the recoil starter and bend it back out so the rivets wouldn’t rub against the flywheel. Probably are better edgers on the market for the same money. Will think twice before I order from McLane again.

ordered this edger &am happy with it once I made 3 different trips to hardware store to find appropriate stabilizing screws for the handle

I specifically ordered this product because it was made in USA-fooled again! Sure I could have called the company and ordered

replacement screws, but who wants to wait 4-5 more days when it could have been done right the 1st time!

    Great Trimmer, minor issue
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
For years I would just use the string trimmer on its side to edge my lawn and although that works I always wanted a better and safer edging system. A year ago I purchased and attachment for the string trimmer and this gives you a better edge but still can be dangerous and can pull when it digs into the dirt. The blade has worn down so I went and purchased a new blade even though my thoughts were to start looking for better alternatives, I could not get the old blade off the attachment after several different ways of trying so I thought to myself, this is a sign that I should get a stand alone trimmer. (Of course my wife wasn’t thinking along these lines). I took a look around the standard places, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Sears prior to looking on Amazon, which always seems to have the best deals. I read all the reviews for this model and decided to purchase it; I received the product faster that the expected date which was a bonus. Assembly was easy and the engine started up on the first try. I took it out for a trial run and like all the other reviews this product worked great, it gives you a nice clean edge and will save you a ton of time if you have a large area to edge which I do, I have over and acre and I have a lot of flower beds to edge around. I do not anticipate and kick-back or pulling from this machine which eliminates any of my safety concerns. Although you can use this as a trimmer, I don’t think this will save you any time, I tried it out but don’t think I will be using it as a trimmer, you will still need to use your trimmer to get close to areas which are against vertical items such as foundations or any other structures.

The only issue I have is with the throttle cable, it is very flimsy and actually broke away from the engine area (a plastic piece that connects the cable). I can probably fix this myself as I am pretty handy but it is brand new so why should I have to. The alternative is to just manually adjust the throttle that is located above the choke, in my opinion this is just as simple to do as pushing the little red throttle cable lever. I will give McLane a call to see what they have to say but over-all this is a great edger. I would have given this a 5 star rating if it weren’t for the throttle issue.

After unpacking, the assembly was very easy and fast. The performance is outstanding and this product is the best I have ever had. I will look at this unit for replacement. Bottomline: it now takes less than 20 minutes as opposed to over an hour with my previous edger- an attachment for a line string trimmer.

I have used a string trimmer add on for edging in the past and found it clumsy to handle. I looked long and hard at dedicated edgers but wondered if the price difference is worth it. It is. The McLane trimmer is easy to manipulate and is well built. I’m sure I will get many seasons use. It is metal where others are plastic and is well balanced. I’m not sure how to use the trimming feature as the guard covers the blade parallel to the wheels when in trim mode.

Works well for maintaining lawn edges but it is not a commercial duty edger. I have used it several times and it performs well for what it is. Definately much better than the “stick” type lawn edgers in all the home improvement stores. Seems quality built, starts very easy and the blade clutch is a great safety feature. I definately would buy it again.

The McLain trimmer is so much better than the very best Sears ones. If more people knew this, Sears would start buying from McLane instead of from China or wherever; or they would discontinue the product. This is one great reason to buy American products.

Excellent edger. Minor assembly. Easy to start. Engine has sufficient power. Blade makes a nice cut. Blade can be tilted for an angled cut. You can stop the blade without having to shut off the engine.

    I’m glad I bought it.

My husband had one of these edgers and needed a new one. The price on this particular one was the best that we found. And a thumbs up to the Fed Ex driver that took it from the truck and carried it all the way back to my garage, about 80′. What a gentleman………..Plus it was delivered in under a week. Just in time for my husband to edge the lawn. Thank you for such an easy and enjoyable buying experience.
