The first Mantis mini-tiller lasted 10 years & I wore out the original set of tines. The 2nd set of serpentine tines had one tine to break. Mantis replaced the tines with a new pair. I had a part on the tiller that was wearing out & needed replaced & decided to buy a new one after I thought of how much work this tiller had done. The Mantis tiller does not have electronic ignition. I usually till the garden with my 6HP Troybilt Horse tiller at the first of every season. The first year I used the Mantis to break up & till new dirt for the garden because my Troybilt tiller needed the carb to be rebuilt. I was surprised to find that the Mantis did till up the soil for it’s size.

I recently got the Echo mini-tiller at a local dealer who sells them; (same identical machine except for some changes); does not have the fold down handlebars like on the Mantis, the color is different, has a better air filter element on the carb., a different choke set up, an electronic ignition with a lifetime warranty on this part, a 5 year factory warranty, a kickstand, already put together, & got the new spring assist starting system which is very easy to pull the starter rope. These tillers are great when having to weed the garden; you just reverse the tines & it won’t till as deep.

I was looking for the serial number when I noticed in tiny print; assembled in China. We got our money’s worth out of the first one. I sure am glad I found a local dealer who services what they sell & a 5 year warranty! (That kickstand sure is a handy accessory to have!)I have had great results with the Mantis & I recommend using STABIL in the unleaded plus fuel. (89 Octane)

The engine is made by Echo anyways! The Mantis & Echo mini-tillers use the same gas & oil ratio as my Echo weed eater. The Echo tiller also uses the same air filter as on my Echo weed eater. This Echo tiller seems to run alot stronger than when the Mantis was new.

The Mantis & Echo tillers are highly recommended by me!

This unit is one of the best investments I’ve made in years. I watched my son use one of these in his all clay yard and was impressed with the performance. It may not look it, but it is a very sturdy tiller. I used it to till my garden and mix sand, clay, and manure prior to planting. A real back saver! I now use it control weeds between vegetable rows. It is ideal for preparing flower beds.

Good power for a smaller machine – so far been great for tilling smaller portion of hillside project – try manhandling a large machine on slopes! Dethatcher/aerator combo work really great too. The assembly instructions/manual could use some improvement – some steps in assembly have only very small pictures illustrating how things are supposed to go together, and instructions aren’t as thorough as they should be on all of the controls. The deficiencies in the manual are the only thing keeping me from giving a 5 star review. Buy it, and once you figure out the rest (left out of the instructions) you will be very happy!

I purchased this tiller from Amazom and received it two days later using the free shipping method! Can’t complain about shipping speed.

I assembled the tiller and used it to till my entire garden. In the past, I have rented a larger tiller for this. The Mantis handled the work like a trooper. The only drawback is that the weeds get tangled and I had to stop periodically to clean the tines. Since I need to stop to rest my back too, this was no problem. Also, if I had kept the weeds out last season, they wouldn’t have been a problem. Now that I have my own Mantis, I can keep the weeds at bay.

Another reviewer commented that the Mantis pulls on your arms when you operate it. While that is true, I don’t find it any more difficult to operate than a larger tiller. In fact, I think it is easier due to it’s light weight. I can maneuver the Mantis much easier than heavier tillers.

I hold back one star because I think that the weed reducers and weed removal tool, sold seperately, should be standard equipment for every Mantis shipped from the manufacturer. Otherwise, this is an excellent machine.

I had purchased my first Mantis 7225 -15-02 (or whatever its model number then) nineteen years ago. When I decided on a new one I naturally thought Mantis because of ease of use and service. I like the improvements of the new model and the addition of the kickstand. It is the perfect tool for my small garden and flower beds. TPM

The tiller with edger and kick stand performs as advertised except the edger does not work. One should be careful to follow the assembly instrucitons carefully or assembley will be more difficult and take longer.

The product failed after 15 min. of use.

    COULD NOT return to Amazon.

Amazon will NOT take returns of gasoline machines.

Local ‘approved service agent’ was not happy to service engine.(Since I did not buy it from them.)

This machine failed again when I brought it home.

Amazon buyers: beware of purchasing motorized products that use gasoline from Amazon. They can not be returned.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned mine for years and am quite pleased. They really stand behind their product. I purchased from Mantis directly because of the one year guarantee. I know their authorized dealers offer that guarantee also, but am pretty sure if you buy from somewhere else you’re on your own. When I called with questions they have always been very helpful.

    My Second Mantis TIller
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My current Mantis Tiller is almost 20 years old and still kicking. I just gave it to my sister so I could buy a new one. Don’t be fooled by other less expensive mini tillers, the secret to the Mantis is pure power and the tines, they will chew through just about anything! If you buy from [...] they offer a 1 yr money back guarantee (the one negative reviewer didn’t understand you have to order from them directly I guess?) but when you order from Amazon you get the free kickstand which is very handy bonus.

BUYERS BEWARE! MANTIS WILL NOT HONOR REFUND POLICY ADVERTISED!!!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
    BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Once you add the oil/gas mixture you CANNOT return to Amazon. I purchased this because of the AD on TV that says “if you are not satisfied for any reason we will refund your money no questions asked.” It worked great on our established garden for pre-planting and in-between for weeding. It was used 5-6 times. Our garden is very small 15′ x 40′. When we went to turn the soil after garden was done, we pulled all weeds and spent plants and started to till. The tines quit turning after 1-4 minutes and smelled like it was overheating. Thought maybe gas was bad, so replaced gas/oil mixture and tried again. No luck continued with the same problem. Took to “Authorized Service Repair Shop”. They tightened something and said it worked. NOT! Took back 3-4 more times and they were unable to fix and in fact stated that they had no idea what was wrong. Went to Mantis to return as per the TV AD and they will not honor the warranty. In the process of filing small claims suit. Will follow-up after that is done. BE WARNED THAT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE AT MANTIS ARE OBNOXIOUS INCLUDING SUPERVISOR TONY MARODI!

I purchased this over other brands due to the reviews. I now feel comfortable paying a higher price for the Mantis. Easy start, easy to use (best going backward as noted in previous reviews). I was leary using it on sod but it did a great job attacking it and doesn’t get tangled very easily (will get some of course). I used it all summer edging, tilling and removing sod. So far, so good.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I thought about buying the Mantis Tiller for several years. I ordered the video and watched it each spring. I was hesitant about spending the money on something I would only use once in a while. Last spring I finally decided to buy the Mantis. I figured I use it to get my garden going, it wouldn’t meet my expectation and I could send it back for a refund. Well, this tiller is everything they say it is. I wouldn’t part with it and I’ve used it many times during the year,I even aerated my lawn.

The Mantis is a great tool for my medium size yard but you can not beat Amazon’s free shipping. Cost of shipping to Hawaii can cost more then the product itself.

    Mantis tiller and attachment
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Incredible piece of machinery. Worked fantastic on about 1000 sq feet of hard, root and rock infested land. Light but man this thing is a bull. Get weed reducers. Roots did get wrapped around the tillers, but only cleared them out every 300 sq feet or so because I wanted to not because I need to. Only took 2-3 minutes to clear. Kick stand is also a must have. Also purchased the Thatcher and aerator attachments. Also did a fantastic job. Boy did the Thatcher bring out the dead grass. Make a bigger job than what I thought, so leave yourself enough time. Only problem with the tiller is that the on/off switch is too close to the right thumb area so you accidentally shut off the unit a lot. To prevent this, I taped the switch to the on position. There is little chance that the machine will be running and you getting your body stuck in it unless you do something stupid. In closing I highly recommend this product and all its attachments.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Purchased to do dethatching and aerating. This 2-cycle is working as hoped and the lawn is now dethatched and aerating is started (3/4 acre). The only problem I found is that using it more than an hour causing the arms to tingle – indicating some nerve issue. I now need to slow down and do no more than an hour at a time then rest. I expect to be using this routinely for dethaching, aerating, tilling, edging and cultivating.

The best part it is better to purchase through Amazon than the manufacturer.

Great Tool – tangles an rocks not a problem
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got this tiller and immediately put it to use in the yard tilling a new garden in some pretty thick crab grass. I was a little worried after reading some of the other reviews about weeds and roots tangling the blades. I did get the weed reducers and even the special tool to clear the weeds. After a few minutes of use, I was disappointed by a nasty tangle that stopped the machine. The tool cleaned it out fast but then I learned a trick that solved the problem. When using the tool, as soon as you notice it start to bind and slow a little, ease-up on the tool and let it run free for a few seconds. It clears the weeds almost immediately and your back to tilling. Used in this way, the tool works very well and easily digs through tough weeds and grass and even fist-sized rocks. Don’t be discouraged by the negative reviews. Get the weed reducers and use this technique to clear the tool.

Mantis does not back their product (at least through Amazon)
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
We looked into this product for quite a while and received the DVD from them. Everywhere you look they advertise their 1 year trial and 100% satisfaction guarantee. After a few months of trying to use this awful piece of equipment (failed to start, fuel problems, choke problems, getting jammed with all kinds of things every few minutes) we decided it was not for us and we were not satisfied. We contacted Mantis and they said they would not take it back that we had to go through Amazon. Amazon’s only offers a 30 day still in box return. Mantis says Amazon is not a registered dealer of the product. This is not resolved yet, but I highly recommend you DO NOT BUY this product.

    Excellent small tiller
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We’ve owned our mantis tiller for at least 10 years and are well pleased with it. We also own a larger tiller which we use for most of the ground breaking and between row tilling of our quarter acre garden. We usually end up with some rows too narrow though and will use the mantis there. Also, when viney plants (squash etc.) make tilling between rows impossible (because the plants grow into other rows) with the large tiller, we switch to the mantis where we can pick it up and move it around the viney plants. We also have found the mantis excellent for digging holes to plant trees etc. It will easily dig down 8″ or so and we then scoop out the loose dirt with a shovel. We can then go down ANOTHER 8″ with the mantis, again remove the dirt and repeat the cycle for as deep as we need to go. The mantis starts fairly easy (usually on 3-4 pulls). The tines are guaranteed for a life time, and after over 10 years use we are still on our original set of tines. Prior to buying the mantis, we owned another small tiller (Ryan brand) which did not compare well to the mantis. It could not break up hard soil as the tines dug in the forward direction and would just bounce on top of hard ground. The Mantis tines move forward, but in use the diller is pulled backwards which forces it to dig in and break up hard soil. The tines are thinner on the mantis causing them to cut the soil rather than bounce on top. We highly recommend this product.

My husband’s favorite Father’s Day present ever!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I gave my husband the Mantis 2-cycle Tiller/Cultivator for Father’s Day this year. I had seen a commercial years ago for the Mantis Tiller. I wanted one for so long. Well, finally I thought, “My husband needs help with our yard, maybe this can do the trick” So I ordered the Mantis from Amazon. When he opened the package he said, “Oh, boy, parts to put together!” I told him that I thought he would like it and he proceeded to put it together. It didn’t take very long. He said thanks and put it outside. Well, I thought to myself, “I guess I was wrong, he didn’t like it” Well, the next weekend he got going on the back yard, tilling. He was so jazzed with the Mantis cutting into the hard ground and the way it ripped through the weeds, he said, “Thanks, honey, I love it!” Whew! I knew it would take time to get him happy about a Father’s Day gift, no more ties or shirts…he is so happy with the Mantis’ power and ability to cut through what we had to offer it. Thanks so much for offering it and making a wonderful product! Helen and Dennis Toevs, California

Even better than my 1992 model
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my second Mantis Tiller. The first one served me well for 16 years before my careless failure to replace the grease seals caused the worm gear to fail. It does everything the TV ads say it will do and does it all well. What the ads don’t tell you is that it takes practice and common sense to use it effectively. After the first day of use I wanted to send it back (my original model) after a week I wouldn’t have traded my car for it. Watch the video, read the manual and practice. The kickstand is a great feature as are the folding handlebars. Neither of these were available 16 years ago. (Wish I had invented them) The tine detangler is also a real help. When breaking new ground or cutting through thick weeds or grass you will need to do a lot of detangling. Even big tillers have this problem with roots so buying a giant front-tine tiller will delay the problem because of its power, but won’t solve it. I have also found customer service to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful when I have had issues or questions about the tiller. Amazon’s price is even better than buying direct from Mantis and there is free shipping. How do they do it? This is a great and durable product at a wonderful price.

My wife and I just purchased an old home on 5 acres. We have lots of flowers beds to keep up with and lots of replanting to do as well as a lot of landscaping. This Mantis tiller is an animal when it comes to digging and cultivating and has cut our time and effort in less than half. I love it and I love my friend who recommended it to me. He even loaned his Mantis to me so I could try it before purchasing one. It did not take five minutes of using it before I knew that I had to have one. I highly recommend it to everyone. Plus, it is so easy to use. Thank you Amazon and Mantis.
